Laser Hair Removal

Whether you
just love to feel smooth or are tired of shaving, laser hair removal is a wonderful and practical treatment.

Enjoy the luxury and convenience of smooth, hair-free skin all the time with laser hair removal! Laser or light based hair removal effectively reduces unwanted hair growth, freeing you from the messiness of shaving and the discomfort of waxing. Laser hair removal uses light energy that passes through the skin to be absorbed by the brown melanin pigment of the hair shaft and hair follicle. The heat build up disrupts the hair follicle such that hair is no longer able to grow. For optimal hair removal the hair must be in an active growth phase, explaining why several treatments are needed for maximal effect.

Where can laser hair removal be used?

Anywhere there’s hair! Popular areas for laser hair removal include the legs, bikini, axilla (underarm), face, and back.

What does a laser hair removal treatment consist of?

Prior to the treatment avoid waxing, electrolysis or plucking the hairs in the area to be treated. Shaving prior to a treatment and in between treatments is recommended. It is also important that the area to be treated is not tanned and has not had any self tanner applied in the weeks prior to treatment. During the treatment, protective eye wear will be provided and we always use professional draping techniques to respect your privacy. The area to be treated will be cleaned and a layer of clear gel applied. A cooling plate is held in contact with the skin, protecting the skin while the light energy is emitted through a hand piece. A brief warmth or a snapping sensation may be noted during the pulse of energy, though it subsides within a moment. After the treatment the area is cleaned of the treatment gel and, if desired, a post procedural cooling gel applied. Post treatment expect some short lived mild warmth and redness. Duration of the treatment depends on the area being addressed; underarm treatments take less than fifteen minutes while a full leg treatment might take an hour or more.

When will I notice the effects of a laser hair removal?

Expect the treated hairs to be shed over the following one to two weeks. The treated hairs tend to be thicker and more stiff after absorbing the light energy, making them easy to wipe away as they purge from the skin.

What is the downtime after a laser hair removal treatment?

Downtime is minimal. Brief, mild warmth and redness (like a light sunburn) may be noted. Itching is occasionally noticed when the hairs are being shed.

What happens as the effects of a laser hair removal wear off?

In between treatments you may notice patchy hair growth, which can be shaved in anticipation of the next treatment. Because hair must be in the active phase of growth for the treatment to be effective, waiting several weeks in between treatments is key. Waxing and plucking should also be avoided in between treatments. After a series of treatments you may notice light regrowth in some areas. Because hair growth is driven by the androgen hormones that our bodies naturally produce, it is impossible to completely eradicate all hair growth. An occasional maintenance treatment helps touch up any hair regrowth.

Are there other alternatives to laser hair removal?

The usual temporary methods of hair removal such as waxing, shaving, plucking and electrolysis serve as alternatives. Because white or gray hairs have less melanin in the hair follicle, these hairs are often tricky to treat with laser hair removal so alternative methods are often recommended.
