Dermal Fillers

Restylane and Juvéderm are the most popular dermal fillers in the US because of their excellent efficacy and exceptional safety.

Smooth your unwanted facial wrinkles and folds, replace lost volume and restore youthful facial contours with dermal fillers! Revolutionary advances have gone beyond collagen, the most well known dermal filler, to give you tremendously effective ways to bring back the volume that our skin tends to lose with time. At Denovo Medspa we currently offer the dermal fillers Restylane®and Juvéderm™.

Restylane and Juvéderm are hyaluronic acid based fillers, meaning their key component is carefully cross-linked hyaluronic acid. This water loving polysaccharide (sugar) is a natural part of your skin. When injected into the skin, the clear hyaluronic acid gel absorbs water, increasing the volume of the skin in the area to rapidly smooth out the undesired wrinkle or fold. Over time the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid molecules and eliminates them just as it does our native hyaluronic acid. The difference between Restylane and Juvéderm lies in the size and shape of the hyaluronic gel particles and the way they are cross-linked. Each filler excels at treating different concerns in the face, so the versatility given by this wide array of fillers helps us bring you the best results.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Restylane and Juvéderm can be used in a host of locales around the face. All are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. Dermal fillers can add fullness to cheek depressions, define cheekbones, accentuate lips, and can lessen the appearance of some indented facial scars. By adding volume to the cheek and middle of the face, the lower face is gently lifted to diminish facial folds. Perlane is exceptional at adding volume to the cheek area! Other popular treatment areas include the nasolabial folds (the crease between the edge of the nose and corners of the mouth), the lines extending downward from the edges of the mouth as well as the vertical lines around the mouth, deep "smile lines" around the eye, the hollows beneath the eye, and between the brows.

What does a dermal filler treatment consist of?

Treatments are physician administered and involve several well placed injections in the area of interest through an ultra fine needle. We will discuss the best way to make the area comfortable during the treatment which might include using a cold gel pack, topical anesthetic cream or injectable anesthesia. After the area is comfortable, we proceed with the treatment, which you are invited to observe with a hand-held mirror. Treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

When will I notice the effects of a dermal filler treatment?

In a word— immediately! The volumizing effect will be present right after the treatment. As with any injection, there can be swelling afterward, so the full effect may not be evident until the swelling fades away. Typically this occurs in a few days. As would be expected, if an injectable anesthetic is used, there will be more swelling until the body absorbs the local anesthetic.

What is the downtime after a dermal filler treatment?

The downtime after a dermal filler treatment is usually minimal, depending on the areas treated and the amount of filler needed. Most commonly, mild to moderate swelling or redness occurs, which can be covered with a complementary quick makeup touch up we always offer here at Denovo Medspa. Other side effects that may occur include itching, bruising, discoloration, tenderness or pain. Typically, most side effects are limited to less than seven days. More severe reactions include the formation of red or swollen hard bumps—these rare reactions occur in approximately 1 in 2,000 patients. If you have a history of cold sores a dermal filler treatment around the mouth can trigger a cold sore outbreak. Using an antiviral medicine beforehand can limit this risk and is recommended.

What happens as the effects of a dermal filler treatment wear off?

As the dermal filler’s effects wear away you will notice a return of the wrinkle or fold or a reduction in the fullness of the area treated. To maintain the smoothing or volumizing effect, another treatment can be performed. Most patients find that two treatments per year are all that is needed to keep the smooth, youthful effect of Restylane and Juvéderm. With regular dermal filler treatments the effects often last longer. When dermal filler is coupled with Botox® (both treatments can be performed on the same day), the effects of both tend to last longer.

Are there other alternatives to dermal fillers?

There are many dermal fillers available. We chose to offer Restylane and Juvéderm at Denovo Medspa because of the reliability of their excellent treatment effects and their exceptional safety. There are more permanent dermal fillers available, though many of these carry an increased risk of post treatment inflammatory reactions or unpredictable treatment effects. Some are simply not well studied enough to predict long term reactions. The world of aesthetic medicine is ever changing and we are constantly researching the most effective options. We embrace the philosophy that empowering you with knowledge about your skin and treatment options available will best achieve optimal results.
